I've worked for a few American based consultancies and they issued me with Corporate Amex cards. Shit useless on the continent. France the worst that any. If they advertised they accepted them their machines would unfortunately malfunction.

Sorry, only the first bit was in reply to you. It's illegal to charge for use of a particular card, I think.

What is illegal? Charging extra or getting rewards?
You don’t have to take any form of payment. Plenty of no cash bars now.
Re charging more. The price is what the outlet charges you. You can negotiate down and they can charge more. You chose to offer your custom or not so long as it’s clear what price you’ve agreed.

You'd be surprised how many places take it. The vast majority do - I use Amex way more than I use Visa/Mastercard.

Benefits - rewards. Avios (mainly), for me.

They charge ridiculous fees to the retailer.

It seems that they arrogantly thing that accepting their card makes a retailer more credible and their marketing will increase a retailers revenue. As a retailer of high ticket items it would make no sense to accept the AMEX card as the profit would be seriously diminished.

I've never lost a sale because I have refused to take an AMEX payment.

Also if a customer says the transaction wasn’t there’s AmEX refund the amount straight away and the retailer has a long process to prove it wasn’t etc

Amex charges outlets more but gives big rewards to users. Don’t know why outlets don’t just add a charge for Amex users. But as someone said, most people have another card anyway.

As Irish Hammer says expensive, a couple of places I tried using it retailers described Amex charges as extortionate

Regular cards cost the retailer about .25% to process the transaction, more business you out thru them the less fees you can negotiate

Amex are up to 3% of the transaction fees in some cases to accept

So no one wants them. Only really an issue wth the Yanks, everyone else will have a visa/mastercard as well.

Because it charges the shop a fee for each purchase.
